The original Dr. Medion CO₂ treatment — freshly activated at home.
Dr. Medion SpaOxy Gel is the brand's signature two-part carbonated gel mask, created to reproduce the intensive CO₂ treatment originally developed by dermatologist Dr Masato Hiki in 1997.
Each treatment consists of a gel + powder that are mixed immediately before application, generating fresh carbon dioxide within the gel. Dr. Medion's formulation is designed to hold that CO₂ against the skin throughout the treatment rather than allowing it to disappear immediately after mixing.
The mask combines this carbonated technology with Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid, Royal Jelly Extract, Licorice Root, Ginseng, Soy, Hatomugi and botanical extracts to support hydration, smoothness and overall skin condition.
The result is skin that looks fresher, brighter, firmer, smoother and beautifully revitalised after treatment.
Think activate → oxygenate → hydrate → revitalise → glow.
BOX CONTAINS 3 COMPLETE TREATMENTS.
WHY I LIKE SPAOXY GEL
Because this isn't simply another hydrating mask with carbon dioxide added for novelty.
SpaOxy Gel is the product around which Dr. Medion was built.
In 1997, Dr Masato Hiki developed the original carbonated gel pack after observing the potential of carbon dioxide in skin treatment. The professional treatment became popular in Japanese aesthetic salons and was subsequently adapted into SpaOxy Gel so the same freshly mixed concept could be used at home.
What makes it particularly interesting is the two-part format. The carbon dioxide isn't simply sitting inside a jar waiting for you to eventually open it. It is generated when the gel and powder are mixed, immediately before the treatment is applied.
That freshness is fundamental to the product.
WHO IS SPAOXY GEL FOR?
Dull, tired or stressed-looking skin
One of my favourite uses. The treatment helps restore that fresh, rested appearance when the complexion simply looks flat.
Loss of firmness and elasticity
Ideal when skin is beginning to look less toned or resilient.
Visible pores and uneven texture
Particularly when pores become more noticeable alongside dullness, excess sebum or loss of firmness.
Dry or dehydrated skin
Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid, Royal Jelly and botanical extracts provide additional moisture and conditioning support.
Mature or ageing skin
A particularly good intensive treatment when your priorities are radiance, firmness, texture and overall skin vitality.
Sensitive or delicate skin
Dr. Medion lists SpaOxy Gel for sensitive and dry skin care as well as pore and ageing care. As always, very reactive skin should introduce any intensive treatment cautiously.
Before an event
Excellent when you want skin to look particularly fresh, smooth and luminous before makeup or an important occasion.
When your normal skincare seems to have stopped making much difference
Sometimes the skin doesn't necessarily need another daily serum. It needs an occasional intensive treatment.
HOW DOES THE CO₂ TECHNOLOGY WORK?
This is the part worth understanding.
When you mix the Gel and Powder, a chemical reaction generates carbon dioxide inside the gel. The gel acts as a medium that helps retain the freshly generated CO₂ in close contact with the skin for the duration of the treatment.
When carbon dioxide concentration increases locally, the body responds through a physiological phenomenon related to the Bohr effect: haemoglobin's affinity for oxygen decreases in an environment with increased CO₂, encouraging oxygen release into surrounding tissues.
This is why carbon dioxide treatments are often discussed in relation to microcirculation and tissue oxygenation.
One important distinction: the mask itself is not pumping oxygen into your skin. The mechanism involves the body's own response to carbon dioxide.
That is a much more accurate — and much more interesting — explanation than simply saying it is an “oxygen mask.”
WHY DO I HAVE TO MIX TWO PARTS?
Because the carbon dioxide needs to be generated freshly.
The first sachet contains the gel base, including Sodium Bicarbonate. The second contains a powder with acids including Citric Acid and Ascorbic Acid. When the two are combined, the reaction generates carbon dioxide within the gel.
Dr. Medion's original formulation was specifically designed to retain the freshly generated gas for an extended period while the mask remains on the skin.
So the mixing isn't inconvenient packaging for the sake of looking professional.
It is part of how the treatment works.
WHAT WILL MY SKIN FEEL LIKE?
Once applied, you may notice a gentle fizzing, tingling or gradual warming sensation as the carbonated treatment sits on the skin. Dr. Medion describes this mild bubbling and warmth as part of the characteristic SpaOxy Gel experience.
The sensation varies considerably from person to person. Some people feel the treatment quite distinctly; others notice very little.
More tingling does not mean better results.
And there is an important difference between a mild active sensation and genuine burning or irritation. If something feels distinctly painful or uncomfortable, remove the treatment.
Skincare should never require bravery.
HYDROLYSED HYALURONIC ACID + ROYAL JELLY
The CO₂ technology is the headline, but SpaOxy Gel is not relying on carbon dioxide alone.
Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid provides moisture support and helps maintain a softer, smoother skin surface.
Royal Jelly Extract contains naturally occurring amino acids, sugars and other components and is included for its moisturising and skin-conditioning properties.
Together they help balance the intensive nature of the carbonated treatment with hydration — particularly useful for skin that looks dull because it is also dry or depleted.
BOTANICAL SUPPORT
The gel contains a surprisingly extensive supporting blend including Hatomugi Seed Extract, Licorice Root Extract, Ginseng Root Extract, Soybean Extract, Grape Seed Extract and Murasaki Root Extract, alongside yeast-derived ingredients.
These contribute moisturising, conditioning and antioxidant support rather than competing with the CO₂ technology for attention.
There is also Wild Rose Oil, which gives the treatment part of its characteristic aromatic profile.
The simplest way to understand the formula is:
CO₂ provides the treatment technology; Hyaluronic Acid, Royal Jelly and botanical extracts take care of the skin around it.
WHAT ABOUT PORES?
SpaOxy Gel is particularly popular in Japan as an intensive pore and texture treatment, and the original 3-treatment version is officially categorised by Dr. Medion for pore care.
It cannot physically erase pores — nothing can.
What it can do is improve the appearance of the surrounding skin through hydration, temporary tightening, improved surface smoothness and better overall skin condition, making pores appear less prominent.
Interestingly, the original SpaOxy Gel was awarded 2nd place in VOCE's 2026 Pore Best Cosmetics awards in the Special Care category, after placing third in the same category in 2025.
So if your concerns are visible pores + dullness + texture, this is a particularly good fit.
IS IT AN ANTI-AGEING TREATMENT?
Yes — but I would describe it as an ageing-support and revitalising treatment, rather than pretending one mask permanently reverses wrinkles.
Its strengths are particularly relevant to ageing skin:
loss of radiance, reduced firmness, dehydration, rough texture and increasingly visible pores.
The combination of carbonated treatment, hydration and conditioning can leave the complexion looking plumper, fresher and more toned, while regular use supports overall skin condition.
It is the kind of anti-ageing treatment where you often notice the difference first in how alive the skin looks, rather than expecting a wrinkle to disappear after thirty minutes.
WHEN WILL I SEE A DIFFERENCE?
SpaOxy Gel is one of those products where the immediate cosmetic result is part of the appeal.
After treatment, the skin can look:
brighter, smoother, fresher, more hydrated and more refined.
This makes it particularly useful before an event, after periods of tiredness or stress, or whenever the complexion looks noticeably dull.
Dr. Medion also recommends a more intensive introductory programme: use SpaOxy Gel consistently for approximately 7–10 days, followed by maintenance treatments around 2–3 times per week.
You do not have to use it that frequently to enjoy it. It also works beautifully as an occasional intensive treatment whenever your skin needs the extra push.
HOW TO USE SPAOXY GEL
After cleansing, empty one Gel sachet and one Powder sachet into the supplied cup.
Mix thoroughly with the spatula until the powder is evenly incorporated into the gel. You do not need to beat or whip it — just make sure the two components are properly combined.
Apply a generous, thick and even layer over clean skin. Do not massage it in like a serum.
Leave the mask on for approximately 20–30 minutes.
When the treatment is finished, use the spatula to gently remove the majority of the gel, then remove the remainder with a damp towel and rinse thoroughly.
Follow with your usual hydrating skincare.
Cleanse → mix Gel + Powder → apply generously → 20–30 minutes → remove → rinse → hydrate.
CAN I APPLY SERUM UNDERNEATH?
Yes — and Dr. Medion specifically suggests applying VC Essence+ before SpaOxy Gel as an optional combination treatment.
If using another serum underneath, I would keep it simple and non-irritating. This is not the moment to create an experimental sandwich of strong acids, retinoids and every active ingredient in your bathroom.
SpaOxy Gel is already the treatment.
Let it be the treatment.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE IT?
For an intensive programme, Dr. Medion recommends beginning with approximately 7–10 days of consistent use, followed by maintenance around 2–3 times weekly.
For most home users, it can also simply be used as a special treatment whenever the skin looks dull, tired or in need of revitalisation.
Because this box contains 3 complete treatments, it is particularly good for:
a three-treatment introduction
a short intensive course
or keeping several treatments ready for occasions when you want the skin looking its best.
WHAT'S ACTUALLY INSIDE THE BOX?
This is important because “Box of 3” means three complete SpaOxy Gel treatments, not three applications taken from one jar.
You receive:
3 × individually portioned Gel sachets
3 × individually portioned Powder sachets
1 × mixing cup
1 × spatula.
Each Gel + Powder pair makes one fresh carbonated mask.
So:
1 Gel + 1 Powder = 1 treatment
3 pairs = 3 complete treatments.
The individual portions also mean the two components remain separate until the moment you are ready to activate them.
DR. MEDION SPAOXY GEL — BOX OF 3
High-Concentration Carbonated Gel Mask for Radiance, Firmness, Pores & Revitalised Skin
The original Dr. Medion CO₂ treatment — freshly activated at home.
Dr. Medion SpaOxy Gel is the brand's signature two-part carbonated gel mask, developed from the CO₂ treatment created by dermatologist Dr Masato Hiki in 1997.
Each treatment consists of a Gel + Powder mixed immediately before application, generating fresh carbon dioxide within the gel. The formula is designed to retain the CO₂ against the skin throughout the treatment, creating Dr. Medion's distinctive intensive carbonated skincare experience.
Alongside the CO₂ technology, Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid, Royal Jelly, Licorice Root, Ginseng, Soy, Hatomugi and botanical extracts support hydration, smoothness and overall skin condition.
The result is skin that looks fresher, brighter, smoother, firmer and beautifully revitalised.
Think activate → oxygenate → hydrate → revitalise → glow.
Box contains 3 complete treatments.
WHY I LIKE SPAOXY GEL
Because this isn't simply another hydrating mask with carbon dioxide added for novelty. SpaOxy Gel is the treatment around which Dr. Medion was built.
In 1997, Dr Masato Hiki developed his original carbonated gel pack after investigating the potential of carbon dioxide in skin treatment. The professional treatment became popular in Japanese aesthetic clinics and salons and was eventually adapted into SpaOxy Gel for home use.
What makes it particularly interesting is the freshly activated two-part format. The carbon dioxide isn't sitting inside a jar waiting for you to eventually use it — it is generated when the Gel and Powder are mixed immediately before application.
The treatment is particularly good when the skin looks tired, dull, dehydrated, uneven or simply less alive than usual, and it makes an excellent intensive treatment before an event.
WHO IS SPAOXY GEL FOR?
Dull, tired or stressed-looking skin
One of its strongest uses. It helps restore a fresher, more luminous appearance when the complexion looks flat.
Loss of firmness and elasticity
A good intensive treatment when skin is beginning to look less toned and resilient.
Visible pores and uneven texture
Particularly when pores appear more noticeable alongside dullness, dehydration or loss of firmness.
Dry or dehydrated skin
Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid, Royal Jelly and botanical extracts provide additional moisture and conditioning support.
Mature or ageing skin
Especially when the priorities are radiance, firmness, hydration, texture and overall vitality.
Before an event
Ideal when you want the complexion looking particularly fresh, smooth and luminous before makeup.
Skin going through periods of stress or fatigue
A useful occasional reset when your everyday routine doesn't seem quite enough.
HOW DOES THE CO₂ TECHNOLOGY WORK?
When the Gel and Powder are mixed, a chemical reaction generates carbon dioxide inside the gel. The gel then acts as a medium that helps retain this freshly generated CO₂ in close contact with the skin during the treatment.
The interesting part is the body's response to carbon dioxide.
An increase in local CO₂ is associated with changes in haemoglobin's affinity for oxygen — a physiological mechanism related to the Bohr effect — encouraging oxygen to be released more readily into surrounding tissues.
This is why carbon dioxide treatments are associated with microcirculation and tissue oxygenation.
Importantly, the mask itself isn't pumping oxygen into your face. The treatment uses CO₂ to encourage a physiological response involving your body's own oxygen supply.
That distinction makes the technology considerably more interesting than simply calling SpaOxy Gel an “oxygen mask.”
WHY DOES IT COME IN TWO PARTS?
Because the carbon dioxide needs to be generated freshly.
The Gel contains the base of the formulation, while the Powder contains components that react when the two are combined. Mixing them immediately before application generates the carbon dioxide within the gel.
This also explains why each treatment is individually portioned. The two components remain separate until the moment you are ready to activate and use them.
So the mixing isn't simply part of the ritual or unusual packaging — it is fundamental to the treatment technology.
HYALURONIC ACID, ROYAL JELLY & BOTANICAL SUPPORT
The CO₂ technology is the headline, but SpaOxy Gel also contains a substantial skin-conditioning system.
Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid supports moisture retention and helps the skin feel softer and smoother, while Royal Jelly Extract provides additional moisturising and conditioning support.
The formula also includes botanical extracts such as Hatomugi Seed, Licorice Root, Ginseng Root, Soybean, Grape Seed and Murasaki Root, providing additional soothing, conditioning and antioxidant support.
There is also Wild Rose Oil, which contributes to the sensory character of the treatment.
The easiest way to understand the formula is: CO₂ provides the treatment technology, while Hyaluronic Acid, Royal Jelly and botanical extracts support hydration and skin condition.
WHAT ABOUT PORES AND TEXTURE?
SpaOxy Gel is particularly interesting when visible pores, roughness and dull texture tend to appear together.
No mask can physically erase pores, but hydration, improved surface smoothness and a temporary tightening effect can make the surrounding skin look more refined, which in turn makes pores appear less noticeable.
This is why I prefer describing the result as refined-looking pores and smoother texture, rather than promising that pores somehow disappear.
It is particularly good when the skin has that slightly tired combination of visible pores + dullness + uneven texture + dehydration.
IS IT AN ANTI-AGEING TREATMENT?
Yes, particularly when the visible signs of ageing include loss of radiance, reduced firmness, dehydration, rough texture and increasingly noticeable pores.
The combination of the carbonated treatment and hydrating ingredients can leave the complexion looking plumper, fresher, smoother and more toned.
I wouldn't position one mask as something that permanently removes wrinkles. Its strength lies much more in improving overall skin vitality and appearance, both immediately and as part of a regular skincare programme.
Often the first thing you notice isn't that one particular line has vanished.
It's that the entire face simply looks fresher and more alive.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
Once applied, you may notice gentle fizzing, tingling or warmth as the carbonated treatment sits on the skin.
The sensation varies considerably. Some people feel it quite strongly, while others notice very little.
More tingling does not mean a better treatment.
A mild active sensation can be completely normal, but genuine burning or significant discomfort is not something you need to tolerate. If the treatment feels distinctly unpleasant, remove it.
WHEN WILL I SEE A DIFFERENCE?
The immediate cosmetic result is one of the reasons SpaOxy Gel is so popular.
After treatment, the complexion can look brighter, smoother, fresher, more hydrated and more refined, making it particularly useful before an event or whenever the skin looks noticeably tired.
Dr. Medion also recommends SpaOxy Gel as a course treatment, beginning with more frequent use before moving into regular maintenance.
It doesn't have to be used intensively to be worthwhile, though. It works equally well as an occasional boost whenever your skin needs something more than the everyday routine.
HOW TO USE SPAOXY GEL
After cleansing, empty one Gel sachet + one Powder sachet into the supplied mixing cup and combine thoroughly with the spatula until the powder is evenly incorporated.
Apply a generous, thick and even layer over clean skin. Don't massage it in like a serum — the gel needs to remain sitting on the skin.
Leave for approximately 20–30 minutes.
At the end of the treatment, use the spatula to gently remove most of the gel, then remove the remainder with a damp towel and rinse thoroughly. Follow with your usual hydrating skincare.
Cleanse → mix Gel + Powder → apply generously → leave 20–30 minutes → remove → rinse → skincare.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE IT?
Dr. Medion recommends an initial intensive course of approximately 7–10 days, followed by maintenance treatments around 2–3 times per week.
You can also use SpaOxy Gel less frequently as an occasional intensive treatment — particularly before an event, after travel, during periods of fatigue or whenever the complexion looks dull and depleted.
Because this box contains three complete treatments, it works particularly well as a short introductory course or as three individual intensive treatments used whenever your skin needs them.
CAN I USE A SERUM UNDERNEATH?
Yes. Dr. Medion specifically recommends VC Essence+ as an optional serum underneath SpaOxy Gel.
If you use another serum, I would keep it simple and non-irritating. There is little reason to combine an intensive carbonated mask with a cocktail of strong acids, retinoids and other potentially irritating actives underneath.
SpaOxy Gel is already the treatment.
WHAT'S INSIDE THE BOX?
Each box contains 3 complete SpaOxy Gel treatments: 3 individually portioned Gel sachets + 3 Powder sachets, together with a mixing cup and spatula. One Gel and one Powder are mixed immediately before use to create one freshly activated carbonated mask.
SPAOXY GEL vs SPAOXY DUALGEL VC+
Both use Dr. Medion's carbonated skincare technology, but SpaOxy Gel is the original intensive CO₂ treatment, freshly mixed from separate Gel and Powder sachets and left on for 20–30 minutes.
SpaOxy Dualgel VC+ offers a quicker, more convenient format with an additional Vitamin C focus.
Size: 3 complete treatments | 3 Gel sachets + 3 Powder sachets | Mixing cup + spatula included | Developed in Japan.
