Dr. Medion Matcha CO₂ Gel Mask is a limited-edition version of the iconic SpaOxy Gel, combining freshly activated carbon dioxide with Japanese Uji Matcha, Vitamin C, Salicylic Acid, Sake-derived ferment ingredients and B vitamins.

Originally developed for the U.S. market, the Matcha edition was brought to Japan as part of Dr. Medion’s 20th anniversary, using organic JAS-certified Uji Matcha from Nagata Tea Garden. The formula also generates 15% more CO₂ than the standard SpaOxy formula, giving this edition a particularly intensive revitalising focus.

WHY I LIKE THE MATCHA CO₂ GEL MASK

Because Matcha isn't here simply to make the mask green.

Matcha is powdered green tea made from Camellia sinensis leaves and naturally contains antioxidant polyphenols, including catechins. In skincare, these compounds are particularly interesting for helping protect against oxidative stress and supporting calmer, healthier-looking skin.

Dr. Medion combines Matcha with its established freshly activated CO₂ system, then adds Vitamin C and Salicylic Acid, making this version especially relevant when the skin is not only dull but also oily, congested, uneven or prone to imperfections.

MATCHA + CO₂ — WHAT MAKES THIS EDITION DIFFERENT?

The Matcha edition combines two very different approaches to revitalising the skin.

When the Gel and Powder are mixed, carbon dioxide is freshly generated within the gel. Dr. Medion’s formulation keeps the CO₂ in close contact with the skin during the treatment, supporting the characteristic circulation and revitalisation effects associated with SpaOxy Gel.

For this limited edition, Dr. Medion increased the amount of generated CO₂ by 15% compared with the standard version, creating a more intensive treatment aimed particularly at ageing and loss of vitality.

The Powder simultaneously releases fresh Uji Matcha, providing antioxidant-rich green tea directly within the newly activated mask.

So rather than adding Matcha to an ordinary wash-off mask, Dr. Medion combines it with the brand’s signature freshly generated carbonated system.

MATCHA + VITAMIN C + SALICYLIC ACID

This combination gives the Matcha edition a very clear personality.

Matcha provides antioxidant support and helps protect the skin from oxidative stress.

Ascorbic Acid — Vitamin C supports brightness and antioxidant protection, making it particularly useful for dull and uneven-looking skin.

SAKE, RICE FERMENT & B VITAMINS

The Gel contains Rice Lees Extract and Saccharomyces/Rice Ferment Filtrate, bringing Japanese fermentation ingredients into the formula alongside the Matcha.

These ingredients support hydration and skin conditioning, helping balance the more purifying elements of the treatment.

The Powder also contains Vitamin B6, Biotin and Calcium Pantothenate, while Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid and Squalane provide additional moisture and softness.

This balance is important. Although Matcha is particularly attractive for oily and congested skin, the aim isn't to leave the complexion aggressively degreased. We want clearer pores and fresher skin while maintaining hydration and comfort.

WILL IT HELP WITH BREAKOUTS & PORES?

This is probably the SpaOxy version I would choose when congestion and blemishes are among the main concerns.

Salicylic Acid helps loosen material within oily pores, while Matcha provides antioxidant support and the carbonated treatment helps leave the complexion looking fresher and more refined.

It isn't an acne medication, and one mask cannot permanently eliminate blackheads or enlarged pores. But as an intensive treatment for oiliness, congestion, rough texture and occasional imperfections, the ingredient combination makes a lot of sense.

If your skin is extremely inflamed or actively irritated, however, I would wait until it has settled rather than adding an intensive carbonated treatment.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL — AND SMELL — LIKE?

Once mixed, the mask develops its distinctive natural Matcha-green colour and authentic green-tea aroma. Dr. Medion specifically uses fresh powdered Matcha rather than relying on an artificial green colour to create the experience.

Once applied, you may notice the characteristic SpaOxy gentle fizzing, tingling or warmth as the freshly activated CO₂ treatment sits on the skin.

The sensation varies from person to person. More tingling does not mean a better result, and genuine burning or significant discomfort is always a reason to remove the treatment.

HOW TO USE MATCHA CO₂ GEL MASK

After cleansing, empty one Gel sachet + one Powder sachet into the supplied mixing cup and combine thoroughly with the spatula until the mixture is even.

Apply a generous, thick layer over clean skin and leave for approximately 20–30 minutes.

At the end of the treatment, gently remove most of the gel with the spatula, then rinse away the remaining residue and continue with your usual skincare.

Cleanse → mix Gel + Powder → apply generously → leave 20–30 minutes → remove → rinse → skincare.

Because this formula already contains Vitamin C and Salicylic Acid, I would keep the rest of that routine relatively simple rather than layering several strong exfoliating or potentially irritating actives at the same time.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE IT?

The Matcha edition can be used as an occasional intensive treatment whenever the complexion looks dull, congested or in need of a reset.

It is particularly useful before an event, after periods of stress or travel, or when oily and combination skin begins to look simultaneously congested and tired.

If using it as part of a regular routine, frequency should be adjusted to your skin, particularly because this version contains Salicylic Acid. Sensitive or reactive skin doesn't need to prove anything by using an intensive treatment more often than it comfortably tolerates.
