Skincare for your scalp - because healthy-looking hair starts at the root.
Dr. Medion Head Spa Scalp is an intensive carbonated pre-shampoo scalp treatment inspired by Japanese head spa rituals.
The dense CO₂ foam combines carbon dioxide with Bentonite and Kaolin clays to absorb excess sebum and impurities that can accumulate around the scalp and hair follicles, while Pentavitin®, Niacinamide and a multivitamin complex help maintain hydration and scalp condition.
And the treatment takes just 2–3 minutes. I think of it as purify → refresh → hydrate → rebalance → revitalise.
WHY I LIKE HEAD SPA SCALP
Because we spend an extraordinary amount of time looking after the hair while largely ignoring the skin underneath it. And your scalp is skin. It produces sebum. It sheds dead cells. It sweats. Styling products accumulate on it. And just like facial skin, it can become oily, dry, itchy, congested or uncomfortable.
Shampoo handles everyday cleansing beautifully, but sometimes the scalp benefits from a more intensive reset. That is where Head Spa Scalp comes in.
The carbonated foam and mineral clays provide a deeper pre-shampoo cleanse, while the moisturising ingredients help prevent the treatment from simply becoming an aggressive scalp degreaser. The goal is not to strip every drop of oil from the scalp. It is to remove unnecessary buildup while keeping the scalp comfortable and balanced.
WHO IS HEAD SPA SCALP FOR?
Oily scalps
When the roots become greasy quickly or the scalp feels heavy between washes.
Scalp buildup
When sebum, dead skin and styling products seem to accumulate despite regular shampooing.
Dry scalps
Because this is not simply a clay detox treatment — Pentavitin® provides hydration support.
Flaky scalps
Particularly when dryness and buildup are contributing to visible flaking.
Itchy or uncomfortable scalps
When the scalp needs a proper refresh rather than another layer of styling product.
Fine or flat hair
Removing excess oil and buildup from the roots can help the hair feel lighter and look fuller.
People who use dry shampoo frequently
Because repeated use can leave considerable residue around the scalp.
Regular styling-product users
When sprays, powders, oils and other products accumulate over time.
Anyone interested in scalp ageing and long-term hair quality
The formula combines cleansing with ingredients selected to support the scalp environment and hair fibre.
Anyone who loves the Japanese Head Spa concept
This is essentially the at-home version of the intensive scalp-cleansing stage of that ritual.
WHY DOES THE SCALP NEED SPECIAL CARE?
Because hair health and scalp health are connected — but they are not the same thing. Your hair shaft is made primarily of keratinised tissue. Your scalp underneath it is living skin containing hair follicles, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, nerves and a skin barrier. That means the scalp has its own needs.
Too much accumulated sebum and product can leave it feeling heavy and uncomfortable. Too little moisture can create dryness and tightness. Aggressive washing can disturb the barrier. And excessive buildup can make even a perfectly good shampoo struggle to cleanse efficiently.
Head Spa Scalp gives us a dedicated treatment for the skin underneath the hair, rather than expecting shampoo and conditioner to do absolutely everything.
THE CO₂ FOAM — THE DR. MEDION SIGNATURE
Carbon dioxide is at the heart of Dr. Medion's skincare philosophy, and Head Spa Scalp brings that technology into hair and scalp care. The product dispenses as a dense carbonated foam, allowing the treatment to spread directly across the scalp and remain in close contact during its short 2–3 minute treatment time.
Dr. Medion positions the carbonated treatment as supporting scalp circulation and vitality while creating that distinctive Japanese head-spa sensation. But I would keep the client expectation practical. The main reason I like the foam format here is that it makes a scalp treatment easy to distribute, quick to use and much less messy than trying to spread a traditional clay mask through the roots.
BENTONITE — THE SCALP DETOX INGREDIENT
Bentonite is an absorbent mineral clay. Its job here is particularly useful for oily and congested scalps because it can bind to excess sebum, surface impurities and accumulated debris.
Think of it almost like a clay mask for your face — except we are using it on the scalp. And just like facial clay masks, the goal is not to make the skin completely oil-free. Sebum has a purpose. We simply want to remove excess oil and buildup that no longer needs to be there.
KAOLIN — GENTLER MINERAL CLEANSING SUPPORT
The formula also contains Kaolin, another absorbent clay. Kaolin complements Bentonite by helping absorb excess oils and impurities from the scalp. Together, they give Head Spa Scalp its intensive cleansing character - Bentonite + Kaolin = absorb and purify.
But most importantly, they sit alongside moisturising ingredients. Because a good scalp detox should leave you feeling fresh, not desiccated.
PENTAVITIN® — HYDRATION FOR THE SCALP
This is one of the reasons Head Spa Scalp is more interesting than a simple clay treatment. Pentavitin® — Saccharide Isomerate — is a plant-derived humectant designed to bind moisture to the skin. Dr. Medion includes it to support scalp hydration and help with concerns such as dryness, discomfort and flaking.
This matters because oily scalp does not automatically mean hydrated scalp. Just like facial skin, you can absolutely have a scalp that is oily + dehydrated. Removing excess sebum while supporting hydration gives us a much more intelligent approach than simply trying to dry the scalp out.
BEAOPLEX® VH — THE MULTIVITAMIN COMPLEX
Head Spa Scalp also incorporates Dr. Medion's Beaoplex® VH multivitamin complex, built around vitamins B3, B5, B6, C and E. Within the ingredient list we see components including: Niacinamide, Pyridoxine HCl, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Tocopheryl Acetate.
The complex provides a mixture of conditioning, moisturising and antioxidant support for the scalp. And I particularly like Niacinamide here. We talk about it constantly in facial skincare, but the scalp is skin too. Its barrier and moisture balance deserve attention just as much as the forehead sitting a few centimetres below it.
FIBERHANCE™ BM — SUPPORTING THE HAIR FIBRE
Dr. Medion's Head Spa concept doesn't stop at the scalp. The range also uses FiberHance™ BM, a sugar-derived hair-strengthening technology designed to interact with keratin within the hair fibre. The aim is to support strength, body and the overall quality of the hair fibre. That is an important distinction.
The scalp treatment is primarily about creating a healthier-feeling environment at the roots, but we also want the hair emerging from that environment to look and feel its best.
WILL IT MAKE MY HAIR LOOK FULLER?
Potentially — but let's explain why properly. If your roots are weighed down by excess sebum, dry shampoo, styling residue and general buildup, removing that accumulation can make the hair sit more freely at the root. That can create the appearance of more lift, more volume and fuller-looking hair.
Dr. Medion specifically describes the hair as appearing fuller after treatment. That is different from claiming the product instantly creates new hair follicles. Think - cleaner scalp → lighter roots → better lift → fuller appearance. Much more realistic.
WILL IT HELP HAIR LOSS?
Dr. Medion markets the Head Spa treatment as supporting scalp circulation, hair vitality and concerns around thinning. A well-cared-for scalp is absolutely a sensible part of a healthy hair routine. But hair loss can have many causes, including genetics, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, stress, illness, medications and various scalp conditions.
A cosmetic scalp treatment cannot diagnose or treat all of those. So I would position Head Spa Scalp as supportive scalp care for healthier-looking, fuller-feeling hair. Not as a medical treatment for hair loss.
If you are experiencing sudden, significant or unexplained shedding, that deserves proper investigation.
WHAT ABOUT DANDRUFF?
Head Spa Scalp can be useful when visible flakes are associated with buildup, excess oil or dryness, and Dr. Medion positions the treatment for dandruff and scalp irritation.
But not every flaky scalp is simply “dry scalp.” Persistent dandruff can involve seborrhoeic dermatitis and other scalp conditions that may require specific treatment. So occasional flakes + buildup = Head Spa can be very useful, but persistent, inflamed or severe scaling = investigate the cause. Skincare — even scalp skincare — works much better when we know what we are actually treating.
WILL IT HELP AN OILY SCALP?
This is one of its strongest uses. Bentonite and Kaolin help absorb excess sebum while the treatment removes accumulated impurities before shampooing. And there is a nice practical benefit.
After rinsing the scalp treatment away, Dr. Medion notes that your regular shampoo may lather more easily because some of the excess oil and buildup has already been removed.
In other words - your shampoo doesn't have to spend its entire first wash fighting through everything sitting on the scalp.
WHAT ABOUT A DRY SCALP?
Surprisingly, also yes! This isn't exclusively an oily-scalp product.
Pentavitin® provides hydration support, while the overall formula is designed to leave the scalp balanced rather than aggressively stripped. If your scalp is severely dry, cracked or inflamed, I would be more cautious with any intensive cleansing treatment. But for a scalp that experiences a mixture of dryness + buildup + occasional flaking, the balance between clay cleansing and humectant support is particularly interesting.
DOES IT REPLACE SHAMPOO?
No. This is a pre-shampoo scalp treatment.
Head Spa Scalp performs the intensive scalp-cleansing step. Your shampoo then completes the cleansing of the scalp and hair. Think - HEAD SPA SCALP = weekly reset, SHAMPOO = regular cleansing. They have different jobs.
And Dr. Medion specifically instructs you to follow Head Spa Scalp with your normal shampoo and conditioner.
HEAD SPA SCALP vs HEAD SPA SHAMPOO
These two are designed to complement each other, but they are not duplicates.
HEAD SPA SCALP - intensive 1–2 times weekly scalp reset. It uses CO₂ foam + Bentonite + Kaolin to absorb excess sebum and buildup while supporting hydration.
HEAD SPA SHAMPOO - your regular cleansing step. It provides ongoing scalp and hair cleansing with the conditioning technologies used throughout the Head Spa range.
SCALP = intensive treatment before shampoo. SHAMPOO = regular hair and scalp cleansing. If you use both, the Scalp treatment goes first.
THE JAPANESE HEAD SPA IDEA
Japanese head spa treatments approach the scalp much more like facial skincare.
Instead of focusing exclusively on whether the hair feels soft afterwards, attention is given to scalp cleansing, massage, hydration, circulation, relaxation and the condition of the hair itself.
Dr. Medion's Head Spa range brings that philosophy into home care, drawing on the brand's long-standing expertise in carbonated beauty treatments. And I really like the concept.
We routinely use cleansers, exfoliants, masks, serums, and moisturisers on our face.
Then we reach the hairline and suddenly expect one bottle of shampoo to manage an entire ecosystem. Your scalp may appreciate a little more attention.
HOW TO USE HEAD SPA SCALP
Use 1–2 times per week, before shampooing. First, thoroughly wet the hair and scalp with warm water.
Do not shake the container. Dispense a generous amount of foam into your palm — approximately 7 cm in diameter. Apply the foam directly to the scalp, distributing it through the roots. Leave it in place for approximately 2–3 minutes.
Then gently massage the scalp. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
Wet scalp → Head Spa Scalp → leave 2–3 minutes → gently massage → rinse → shampoo → conditioner/treatment.
CAN I USE IT EVERY DAY?
I wouldn't. Dr. Medion recommends 1–2 applications per week. This is an intensive treatment, not your everyday shampoo. More is not automatically better.
Give the scalp the reset when it needs it, then let your regular haircare handle the daily maintenance.
CAN I USE IT ON COLOURED HAIR?
The treatment is applied primarily to the scalp rather than the lengths, followed by shampoo and conditioner.
If your colour is extremely fresh, your scalp is irritated after colouring or your colourist has given you specific aftercare instructions, follow those first. And if you have a particularly sensitive scalp, patch testing is sensible.
The formula does contain several aromatic botanical oils, including Orange, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Pine and Clary Sage oils. For many people these contribute to the fresh spa-like experience. For someone specifically sensitive to essential oils, they are worth knowing about.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
Expect a dense foam and a distinctly fresh, stimulating scalp sensation.
The formula includes ingredients such as Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Vanillyl Butyl Ether alongside the carbonated base. That sensory element is part of the Head Spa experience.
But there is an important difference between fresh/tingly and burning/uncomfortable. If your scalp is telling you very clearly that it dislikes something, listen to it. Beauty treatments are not endurance sports.
