Dr. Medion Clustive Water is a 2-in-1 hydrating lotion and beauty essence designed to improve the skin’s own ability to hold moisture rather than simply adding temporary hydration to the surface.

The formula combines three human-type ceramides, 11 amino acids, three forms of Hyaluronic Acid, Polyglutamic Acid, Fucoidan and fermented Bacillus-derived ingredients to replenish moisture and support a stronger, more resilient skin barrier.

Despite its name, this isn't a simple facial water. It has a slightly rich, silky texture that absorbs quickly into the stratum corneum, leaving the skin feeling soft, plump and comfortable without the heaviness of a cream.

WHY I LIKE CLUSTIVE WATER

Because it focuses on something that is often overlooked when treating dehydrated skin: giving the skin the components it needs to retain water, not simply adding more water.

When the barrier is compromised, moisture escapes more easily and the skin can become tight, rough, flaky and increasingly reactive. Applying richer and richer creams doesn't always solve the problem if the underlying barrier remains depleted.

Clustive Water combines humectants that attract and retain water with ceramides and amino acids naturally associated with the skin's barrier and Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF). That makes it particularly useful for persistent dehydration and sensitivity rather than just providing a temporary fresh feeling.

WHO IS CLUSTIVE WATER FOR?

Dry or dehydrated skin
Its strongest indication. Multiple humectants help replenish water while ceramides support the barrier that keeps it there.

Sensitive or reactive skin
The formula is alcohol-free, fragrance-free and colourant-free, with a deliberately gentle approach to hydration.

Tight or uncomfortable skin

THREE CERAMIDES + CHOLESTEROL

Clustive Water contains Ceramide NG, Ceramide NP and Ceramide AP, alongside cholesterol.

Ceramides are lipids naturally present in the outer skin barrier, where they help organise the protective structure that reduces water loss and protects the skin from external stress.

When ceramide levels or barrier function are compromised, skin tends to lose moisture more easily and can become dry, rough and sensitive.

Adding ceramides to a hydrating product therefore makes sense: we aren't only supplying moisture, we're supporting the structure responsible for keeping that moisture inside the skin.

11 AMINO ACIDS — SUPPORTING THE SKIN'S NMF

Clustive Water also contains 11 amino acids, including Arginine, Aspartic Acid, Glycine, Alanine, Serine, Valine, Proline, Threonine, Isoleucine, Histidine and Phenylalanine.

Amino acids are important components of the skin's Natural Moisturising Factor, or NMF — the mixture of water-binding substances naturally present within the stratum corneum.

Together with Sodium PCA and Sodium Lactate, they help maintain hydration, softness and flexibility.

This is particularly useful when skin doesn't just look dry but feels tight, papery or uncomfortable, suggesting that its natural water-binding system needs more support.

TRIPLE HYALURONIC ACID + POLYGLUTAMIC ACID

Clustive Water uses three forms of Hyaluronic Acid: Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid and Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate.

These are joined by Polyglutamic Acid, another highly effective humectant that helps bind water and maintain hydration at the skin surface.

Rather than relying on one fashionable hydrating ingredient, the formula creates a broader moisture network with Hyaluronic Acid + Polyglutamic Acid + Glycerin + amino acids + Sodium PCA + Sodium Lactate.

That is what makes Clustive Water interesting for persistent dehydration: it approaches moisture retention through several complementary mechanisms.

FUCOIDAN + FERMENTED SKINCARE

Hydrolysed F-Fucoidan is a marine-derived polysaccharide included for its moisturising and skin-conditioning properties, helping support comfortable, resilient skin.

The formula also contains a Bacillus fermented ingredient, referred to by Dr. Medion as Pousail, alongside additional marine-derived components.

These ingredients complement the ceramide and amino-acid system by supporting hydration and overall skin condition rather than trying to make Clustive Water an aggressive active treatment.

The emphasis here is very clearly repair the moisture environment and keep the skin comfortable.

IS IT A TONER OR A SERUM?

A little of both — which is why Dr. Medion describes Clustive Water as a beauty water combining the functions of a lotion and essence.

In Japanese skincare, “lotion” usually means a hydrating liquid applied after cleansing rather than the creamy moisturiser that the word often describes in Western skincare.

Clustive Water goes beyond a conventional hydrating toner because of its richer concentration of ceramides, amino acids and multiple humectants, but remains lighter and more fluid than a conventional serum or cream.

I would therefore think of it as an intensive hydrating essence: your first substantial moisture and barrier-support step after cleansing.

WILL IT REPLACE MY MOISTURISER?

For some oily or combination skins, Clustive Water may provide enough hydration on its own during warmer weather. For dry, dehydrated or barrier-compromised skin, I would normally follow it with a cream.

The two products do different jobs particularly well: Clustive Water floods the stratum corneum with humectants and barrier-supporting ingredients, while a cream provides the more occlusive layer that helps reduce moisture loss.

Dr. Medion recommends following it with a moisturiser, with VC Cream+ suggested as one option.

HOW TO USE CLUSTIVE WATER

Apply morning and evening after cleansing.

Take a small amount into the palms and gently press or pat it over the face until absorbed. There is no need to rub aggressively or use a cotton pad.

Follow with your serum if required and finish with moisturiser. In the morning, always complete the routine with sunscreen.

Cleanse → Clustive Water → serum/treatment if needed → moisturiser → SPF in the morning.

If your skin is particularly dehydrated, you can also apply a second thin layer to areas that need additional moisture rather than using one excessively large amount.

CLUSTIVE WATER vs VC LOTION+

Both are used early in the Dr. Medion routine, but they have different priorities.

VC Lotion+ is the more active multivitamin option, with Vitamin C and supporting vitamins aimed at brightness, pores, antioxidant care and hydration.

Clustive Water is much more specifically focused on deep hydration, barrier support and sensitivity, with three ceramides, 11 amino acids, multiple forms of Hyaluronic Acid and Polyglutamic Acid.

If your main concern is dullness and brightening, I would lean towards VC Lotion+. If the skin is dry, dehydrated, tight or sensitive, Clustive Water is the more targeted choice. They can also be layered when the skin needs both.
