Meder Salva-Derm Calming Prebiotic Moisturising Cream for Sensitive & Reactive Skin
Meder Salva-Derm Calming Prebiotic Moisturising Cream for Sensitive & Reactive Skin
When your skin reacts to everything, the answer usually isn't to give it more to deal with.
Salva-Derm is the MEDER cream I reach for when the main problem is sensitivity, reactivity, redness, discomfort or a skin barrier that simply doesn't seem as resilient as it should be.
This is the skin that suddenly stings when you apply products you've used before. It flushes easily, becomes uncomfortable with changes in temperature, reacts after treatments, dislikes new skincare and sometimes seems to have a mind of its own.
And when that happens, the temptation is often to keep searching for another active ingredient to "fix" it.
I usually want to do the opposite.
Sensitive skin often needs less stimulation and more support.
Salva-Derm is designed to hydrate, replenish skin-identical lipids, support the microbiome and strengthen the skin's natural protective barrier, while keeping the formula comfortable enough for reactive skin.
I think of it as:
calm → hydrate → restore → strengthen → protect.
WHY I LIKE SALVA-DERM
Sensitivity is one of those skin concerns where aggressive treatment can very easily make the original problem worse.
If the skin is already struggling to protect itself, constantly exfoliating it, changing products, adding stronger actives or trying to "build tolerance" can create an exhausting cycle:
sensitivity → more treatment → more irritation → weaker barrier → even more sensitivity.
Salva-Derm takes a different approach.
Rather than asking sensitive skin to work harder, we're trying to create an environment in which it can function more normally again.
We give it water. We support its lipids. We reinforce the barrier. We support the microbiome. And importantly, we give the skin some breathing room.
That's why Salva-Derm isn't a dramatic product.
It's a stability product.
And when you have genuinely reactive skin, stability can be exactly what you're looking for.
WHO IS SALVA-DERM FOR?
I particularly like Salva-Derm for:
Sensitive skin
When the skin reacts easily to skincare, weather or environmental changes.
Reactive skin
When products that should feel completely normal frequently sting, burn or cause discomfort.
Redness-prone skin
Particularly when redness appears alongside sensitivity and barrier weakness.
Normal skin that needs a dependable everyday moisturiser
MEDER specifically recommends Salva-Derm for normal skin or sensitive skin without significant oiliness or dryness.
Combination skin
Especially when you need hydration and calming without the richness of a dry-skin cream.
Stressed skin
After periods of travel, lack of sleep, environmental exposure or too much skincare experimentation.
Barrier-compromised skin
When the skin has become increasingly reactive after over-cleansing, excessive exfoliation or inappropriate actives.
Skin that suddenly “reacts to everything”
When the priority needs to shift from correcting every concern to restoring comfort and resilience.
It can also be a very useful moisturiser when your skin simply doesn't fit neatly into either the dry or oily category.
WHAT DOES “SENSITIVE SKIN” ACTUALLY MEAN?
Sensitive skin isn't one single diagnosis.
It's a description of skin that has a lower tolerance to things that wouldn't normally cause significant discomfort.
That might mean skincare ingredients, temperature changes, wind, pollution, friction, hot water or professional treatments.
You may experience:
stinging
burning
itching
tightness
redness
flushing
or simply the feeling that your skin is constantly uncomfortable.
Sometimes sensitivity is something you've experienced for years.
Sometimes it appears suddenly.
And those two situations aren't necessarily the same.
SENSITIVE SKIN VS SENSITISED SKIN
This distinction is incredibly useful.
SENSITIVE SKIN
Some people naturally have skin that is more reactive. Genetics, vascular reactivity, barrier characteristics and inflammatory responses can all play a role.
You may have always said:
"My skin has been sensitive for as long as I can remember."
SENSITISED SKIN
This is skin that has become sensitive because something has disturbed it.
And very often, skincare itself is involved.
Too much exfoliation. Too many acids. Aggressive retinoid use. Harsh cleansing. Constantly changing products. Overuse of acne treatments. Repeated professional procedures without enough recovery time.
The skin that once tolerated everything suddenly starts saying:
"Absolutely not."
The good news is that sensitised skin may improve significantly when we remove the trigger and give the barrier time and support to recover.
Salva-Derm can be particularly useful during that rebuilding process.
SENSITIVITY IS NOT THE SAME AS AN ALLERGY
This is another important distinction.
Sensitive skin may sting, flush or become uncomfortable when exposed to certain products or environmental triggers.
An allergic reaction involves the immune system responding to a specific substance.
That may cause symptoms such as significant itching, swelling, rash or dermatitis.
Salva-Derm is designed for sensitive skin, but no cosmetic product can guarantee that nobody will ever be allergic to one of its ingredients.
So if you experience substantial swelling, persistent rash, severe itching or a reaction that seems more significant than ordinary sensitivity, don't simply keep applying the product because it's labelled "for sensitive skin."
That needs to be assessed appropriately.
WHY DOES MY SKIN SUDDENLY STING?
When the protective barrier is functioning properly, it limits the penetration of substances from the outside environment.
When that barrier becomes compromised, substances can penetrate more easily and sensory nerve endings may become more exposed to irritation.
Suddenly:
your usual serum stings.
water feels uncomfortable.
moisturiser burns.
cold wind hurts.
Even products you've used for months can suddenly feel completely different.
This doesn't necessarily mean you've suddenly become allergic to everything in your bathroom.
Sometimes the real problem is:
the condition of the skin those products are being applied to has changed.
Restore the barrier, and tolerance may improve.
WHAT IS THE SKIN BARRIER?
Think of your skin barrier as your body's external protective wall.
The outermost layer contains skin cells surrounded by specialised lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids.
A simple way to picture it is:
skin cells = bricks
skin lipids = mortar
When that structure is healthy, it helps keep water inside while limiting the entry of irritants from outside.
When it becomes compromised, the skin can lose water more easily and become much more vulnerable to its environment.
That's why barrier-impaired skin can be simultaneously:
dehydrated, tight, red, reactive and uncomfortable.
And that's why simply adding a "calming ingredient" isn't always enough.
We need to help rebuild the protective environment around the skin too.
WHAT DOES SALVA-DERM ACTUALLY DO?
Salva-Derm approaches sensitive skin from several directions at once.
Ceramide 3 helps support the lipid structure of the skin barrier.
Hyaluronic acid provides lightweight hydration and helps improve water retention.
Aquaxyl™ supports the skin's natural water-management systems.
BioEcolia® prebiotic helps support a healthier microbiome.
Macadamia Oil provides skin-compatible lipid nourishment and helps restore softness and comfort.
Panthenol supports hydration and helps calm irritated skin.
Carrageenan and Chlorella algae extracts add soothing, moisturising and antioxidant support.
So rather than:
red skin → add something soothing
we're thinking more broadly:
hydrate → replenish lipids → support microbiome → reinforce barrier → improve resilience.
That's the difference.
WHY DOES THE MICROBIOME MATTER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?
Because your skin isn't working alone.
Its surface is home to a huge community of microorganisms collectively known as the skin microbiome.
These microorganisms interact with the barrier and immune system and form part of the skin's natural defence.
When that ecosystem is disturbed, skin can become less resilient.
This is particularly relevant when somebody has spent months using aggressive cleansers, antibacterial products or excessive exfoliation in an attempt to achieve "perfectly clean" skin.
Healthy skin isn't sterile.
Salva-Derm contains BioEcolia® prebiotic to help support beneficial microorganisms and maintain a healthier microbial environment.
I like this because we're not only asking:
"How can I make the redness disappear?"
We're asking:
"How can I help this skin become healthier and less reactive overall?"
WHAT DOES “SKIN-IDENTICAL” MEAN?
MEDER describes Salva-Derm as a skin-identical moisturiser.
That doesn't mean the cream is literally identical to human skin.
It means the formula includes components designed to work with substances and structures naturally found in healthy skin — particularly barrier lipids such as ceramides.
I think of it as giving the skin materials it already recognises and knows how to use.
Instead of forcing sensitive skin through aggressive stimulation, we're helping replace some of what it needs to protect itself normally.
For reactive skin, that approach makes a lot of sense.
HOW TO USE SALVA-DERM
Salva-Derm is your moisturising step, so it comes after your cleanser, everyday serum and any targeted Active Care product.
For sensitive skin, a classic MEDER routine can be beautifully simple:
Net-Apax → Soin-Apax → Red-Apax if needed → Salva-Derm
STEP 1 — CLEANSE
Use Net-Apax when sensitivity is the dominant concern.
With sensitive skin, cleansing should remove what needs removing without leaving the face feeling tight, hot or stripped afterwards.
STEP 2 — APPLY SOIN-APAX
Soin-Apax gives us the everyday calming and antioxidant serum step.
Allow it to absorb.
STEP 3 — APPLY RED-APAX IF NEEDED
If persistent redness, discomfort and hypersensitivity require more targeted treatment, apply Red-Apax before your cream.
STEP 4 — APPLY SALVA-DERM
Apply Salva-Derm evenly over the face and neck and smooth it gently into the skin.
There's no need for vigorous massage.
Sensitive skin doesn't need to be rubbed into submission.
STEP 5 — SPF IN THE MORNING
Finish with appropriate sun protection during the day.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE IT?
Salva-Derm is designed for morning and evening use.
This is an everyday moisturiser rather than a short corrective treatment, so if it suits your skin, you can continue using it routinely.
And for sensitive skin, consistency is particularly useful.
If we've finally found a simple routine that leaves your skin calm, comfortable and predictable, I don't want you changing it every three weeks because social media discovered another ingredient.
Sometimes the best sensitive-skin routine is the one that becomes almost boring.
Boring can be excellent for reactive skin.
YOUR MORNING ROUTINE
1. Net-Apax
2. Soin-Apax
3. Red-Apax if part of your programme
4. Salva-Derm
5. SPF
That's enough for many sensitive skins.
We don't need to prove the quality of a routine by how many bottles are involved.
YOUR EVENING ROUTINE
If you're wearing substantial makeup:
1. Remove your makeup gently
2. Net-Apax
3. Soin-Apax
4. Red-Apax if prescribed
5. Salva-Derm
Then leave the skin alone.
No unnecessary acid toner. No scrub because the skin "feels rough." No spontaneous peel because you saw one online.
If we're trying to rebuild resilience, we need to stop repeatedly resetting the recovery process.
WHAT'S INSIDE IT?
Salva-Derm combines hydration, skin-compatible lipids, prebiotic support and calming ingredients.
MACADAMIA OIL
Macadamia Oil is particularly interesting for dry or sensitive skin because of its fatty-acid profile, including palmitoleic acid — omega-7.
Lipids help improve softness, flexibility and barrier comfort.
And unlike the idea of simply covering the skin in a random oil, we're using an emollient within a complete moisturising formula alongside humectants, ceramides and prebiotics.
The practical result we're looking for is:
less tightness, better comfort and a more flexible skin surface.
Macadamia Oil also gives Salva-Derm enough nourishment to support sensitivity without turning it into an extremely heavy dry-skin cream.
CERAMIDE 3
Ceramides are naturally present in the skin barrier.
They're part of the lipid "mortar" sitting between the cells of the outer skin.
When ceramide levels or organisation become compromised, the barrier can become more permeable.
Water escapes more easily and external irritants gain easier access.
Ceramide 3 helps support that protective lipid structure.
For sensitive skin, this matters enormously because calming the surface is useful, but making the skin harder to irritate in the first place is even more valuable.
HYALURONIC ACID
Hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain water.
MEDER uses hydrolysed hyaluronic acid in the current Salva-Derm formula to support hydration without requiring an excessively heavy texture.
When sensitive skin becomes dehydrated, discomfort often increases.
Fine lines become more visible, the surface feels tighter and the barrier may function less effectively.
So hydration isn't just about making sensitive skin look plump.
It's part of helping it feel comfortable and functional.
AQUAXYL™
Aquaxyl™ is derived from xylitol-related plant sugars and supports the skin's water balance.
Rather than thinking of hydration as simply putting water onto the surface, Aquaxyl™ is designed to support the biological mechanisms involved in retaining and distributing moisture.
This works beautifully alongside hyaluronic acid.
Think:
Hyaluronic acid helps provide and retain hydration.
Aquaxyl™ helps support the skin's ability to manage that hydration.
Together, they help create skin that feels less tight and more consistently comfortable.
BIOECOLIA® PREBIOTIC
BioEcolia® is an alpha-glucan oligosaccharide prebiotic.
Its job is to help create favourable conditions for the beneficial microorganisms naturally living on the skin.
This matters because barrier health, microbiome balance and skin sensitivity are interconnected.
I don't want sensitive skin to become dependent on constantly suppressing everything happening on its surface.
I want to help restore a healthier ecosystem.
That's much more aligned with MEDER's overall philosophy.
PANTHENOL
Panthenol — also known as pro-vitamin B5 — is one of those ingredients I really like in sensitive-skin formulas because it isn't trying to be dramatic.
It supports hydration, improves skin softness and helps calm irritation.
Sensitive skin often benefits from ingredients that simply do their job reliably without creating another challenge for the skin to adapt to.
Panthenol is exactly that type of ingredient.
Think:
calm + hydrate + support recovery.
CARRAGEENAN
Carrageenan is derived from red seaweed.
In skincare, it functions primarily as a moisturising and skin-conditioning ingredient, helping create a comfortable hydrating film on the surface.
That may not sound as exciting as a peptide with a futuristic trademarked name.
But sensitive skin doesn't always need exciting.
It needs comfortable, hydrated and protected.
And carrageenan contributes to exactly that.
CHLORELLA ALGAE EXTRACT
Chlorella is a microalgae rich in naturally occurring nutrients and antioxidant compounds.
Within Salva-Derm, its role is particularly relevant to environmental protection and antioxidant support.
Sensitive skin can be more vulnerable to environmental stressors, including pollution and oxidative stress.
So alongside the barrier-repair side of the formula, Chlorella gives us another layer of defence.
Again, we're not "detoxing" the skin.
We're supporting its ability to cope with the environment around it.
SALVA-DERM OR RED-APAX?
This distinction is extremely important because both appear in MEDER's sensitive-skin programme.
RED-APAX
Red-Apax is your targeted Active Care serum.
I reach for it when we're actively addressing:
persistent redness
hypersensitivity
burning or discomfort
reactive skin
and the inflammatory processes associated with sensitivity.
It goes before your cream.
SALVA-DERM
Salva-Derm is your everyday moisturiser.
Its job is to hydrate, support the barrier, support the microbiome and maintain comfort.
Think:
Red-Apax = actively calm the sensitivity
Salva-Derm = maintain the environment in which the skin can stay calm
And yes — they work beautifully together.
MEDER itself recommends the sensitive-skin routine of Net-Apax + Soin-Apax + Red-Apax + Salva-Derm when targeted redness care is needed.
DO I NEED RED-APAX AS WELL?
Not necessarily.
If your skin is mildly sensitive but generally stable, Salva-Derm may be perfectly adequate as your everyday moisturiser.
Red-Apax becomes more relevant when sensitivity itself is something we're actively trying to correct.
For example:
persistent redness.
frequent flushing.
ongoing discomfort.
burning.
or significant reactivity.
Don't add another product simply because it exists.
Use the targeted Active Care when there's a target that actually needs treating.
SALVA-DERM OR ARMA-DERM?
Both can support uncomfortable skin, but they solve different problems.
CHOOSE SALVA-DERM IF...
The dominant concern is:
sensitivity
reactivity
redness
normal-to-combination skin needing barrier support
or skin that doesn't tolerate much.
Think:
CALM + STRENGTHEN.
CHOOSE ARMA-DERM IF...
The dominant concern is:
dryness
flaking
lipid deficiency
tightness
or mature skin becoming significantly drier.
Think:
NOURISH + REPLENISH.
If the skin is extremely dry and sensitive, the choice becomes more individual.
We look at which problem is dominating rather than simply reading the label on the jar.
SALVA-DERM OR DERMA-FILL?
These can both work beautifully on sensitive skin.
The difference is what you want from the moisturising step.
DERMA-FILL
Best when the main priority is lightweight hydration.
It works particularly well during summer, underneath makeup and underneath SPF.
SALVA-DERM
Best when the main priority is sensitivity, barrier comfort and resilience.
If sensitive skin is also very dehydrated, we can even use:
Derma-Fill → Salva-Derm
because MEDER specifically allows Derma-Fill to be layered underneath another cream.
Again, one gives us extra water-focused hydration.
The other gives us the more complete sensitive-skin moisturising step.
SALVA-DERM OR EQUA-DERM?
This is particularly useful for combination skin.
EQUA-DERM
Choose it when excess sebum and shine are the dominant problems.
SALVA-DERM
Choose it when the skin is more reactive or sensitive, without significant excess oil or dryness.
Interestingly, MEDER recommends that some combination skins use:
Equa-Derm in the morning → Salva-Derm in the evening.
The idea is to regulate excessive daytime sebum without overcorrecting sebaceous activity around the clock.
I like this approach because combination skin doesn't always need the same treatment morning and night.
CAN NORMAL SKIN USE SALVA-DERM?
Absolutely.
In fact, MEDER specifically recommends Salva-Derm for normal skin or sensitive skin without obvious oiliness or dryness.
And I think that's worth saying because skincare marketing sometimes makes people with normal skin feel as though they don't have enough problems.
You don't need to manufacture a concern.
If your skin is:
comfortable.
balanced.
not particularly oily.
not particularly dry.
and you simply want to maintain hydration, barrier health and resilience,
Salva-Derm can be a very sensible everyday moisturiser.
Healthy skin deserves maintenance too.
WHAT IF MY SKIN BURNS WHEN I APPLY EVERYTHING?
This is where I want you to stop adding products.
If even very simple skincare suddenly burns, your barrier may be significantly compromised or something else may be going on.
Strip the routine back to essentials.
Gentle cleansing.
Simple hydration.
Barrier support.
Sun protection.
And give the skin time.
If burning is significant, persistent, associated with rash or swelling, or continues despite simplifying the routine, it should be assessed rather than endlessly treated with new cosmetics.
Sometimes the most intelligent skincare decision is knowing when skincare isn't the entire answer.
WHAT ABOUT ROSACEA?
Sensitive, red and reactive skin can sometimes overlap with rosacea.
Salva-Derm can be a useful moisturiser for skin that needs calming hydration and barrier support, and Red-Apax may also fit into a redness-focused MEDER routine.
But skincare does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment for rosacea.
If you're experiencing persistent central facial redness, frequent flushing, visible vessels, inflammatory bumps, eye symptoms or progressive worsening, it's worth having the condition properly assessed.
Our skincare goal then becomes supporting the skin alongside appropriate management, rather than pretending a moisturiser can cure a medical condition.
CAN I USE SALVA-DERM AFTER PROFESSIONAL TREATMENTS?
Potentially, yes, because hydration and barrier support are often important during recovery.
But the exact timing depends entirely on the procedure.
A gentle facial and an ablative laser are not remotely the same thing.
So don't automatically apply your normal skincare immediately after every professional treatment just because it's labelled "sensitive."
Follow the specific aftercare instructions you've been given.
Once normal skincare can be reintroduced, Salva-Derm can be a very useful product for helping maintain hydration, comfort and barrier resilience.
CAN I USE SALVA-DERM UNDER SPF?
Yes.
MEDER specifically confirms that Salva-Derm can be used underneath sunscreen.
The order is:
Salva-Derm → SPF → makeup
If the combination feels too rich during warmer weather, Derma-Fill may be a lighter daytime option.
Again, we adapt the routine instead of forcing your skin to tolerate a texture it doesn't enjoy.
IS SALVA-DERM GOOD UNDER MAKEUP?
Yes, particularly when sensitivity or dehydration is making foundation catch on the skin.
A calm, properly moisturised surface generally gives makeup a much better base.
But allow Salva-Derm to absorb before continuing with SPF and foundation.
And if your makeup repeatedly causes irritation, don't expect moisturiser to act as an impenetrable shield between your skin and a product it genuinely doesn't tolerate.
Sometimes the makeup itself needs changing.
WHY CAN SENSITIVE SKIN GET WORSE IN WINTER?
Cold weather creates several challenges at once.
Outdoor air is colder and often drier. Indoor heating reduces humidity. Wind increases environmental exposure, and moving repeatedly between cold outdoor temperatures and heated rooms can aggravate reactive skin.
The result may be:
more tightness.
more redness.
more stinging.
and poorer moisture retention.
This is when Salva-Derm's combination of hydration, ceramides, lipids and microbiome support becomes particularly useful.
If your skin also becomes genuinely dry, we may need to adjust the routine further rather than simply applying more and more Salva-Derm.
AND WHY CAN IT GET WORSE IN SUMMER?
Sensitive skin isn't automatically happier in warm weather.
Heat can increase flushing.
Sweat can irritate.
UV exposure creates inflammatory and oxidative stress.
Air conditioning can dehydrate.
And suddenly we're layering sunscreen, makeup and skincare in hot weather.
So the routine may need to become lighter but not less protective.
Salva-Derm can still work beautifully, but if the texture becomes too much underneath SPF, Derma-Fill may be useful during the day while Salva-Derm remains your evening moisturiser.
DO I NEED TO EXFOLIATE SENSITIVE SKIN?
Sensitive skin can be exfoliated in some circumstances.
But it does not need to be exfoliated simply because exfoliation is fashionable.
If the skin is actively:
burning.
stinging.
red.
flaking from irritation.
or barrier-impaired,
my priority is not removing more cells from the surface.
My priority is restoring comfort and resilience.
Once the skin is stable, we can decide whether exfoliation actually provides a benefit.
Sensitive skin doesn't need to prove its strength by surviving aggressive skincare.
WHEN WILL I SEE A DIFFERENCE?
Comfort can improve relatively quickly.
You may notice that the skin feels:
less tight
better hydrated
softer
calmer
and generally more comfortable.
But improving the skin's resilience is a longer-term process.
If the barrier has been repeatedly damaged for months, I don't expect one night of moisturiser to undo everything.
Give it consistency.
The more useful long-term question isn't:
"Did my skin look different after one application?"
It's:
"Is my skin becoming less reactive to normal life?"
Does washing feel more comfortable? Does cold weather bother you less? Do products sting less frequently? Does redness settle more easily? Does the skin hold hydration better?
Those are meaningful improvements.
MY SALVA-DERM RULES
If you remember nothing else from this page, remember these:
Sensitive and sensitised aren't necessarily the same thing.
You may naturally have reactive skin, or your routine may have made previously resilient skin sensitive.
Sensitivity isn't automatically an allergy.
But significant itching, swelling or persistent rash shouldn't simply be ignored.
Barrier first.
If your skin is struggling to protect itself, piling more active ingredients on top rarely makes life easier.
Healthy skin isn't sterile.
The microbiome is part of your skin's protective environment.
Don't chase every sensation with another product.
Sometimes sensitive skin improves when the routine becomes simpler.
Red-Apax and Salva-Derm aren't duplicates.
Red-Apax is targeted Active Care for sensitivity and redness. Salva-Derm is your everyday moisturiser.
Normal skin can use Salva-Derm too.
You don't need a dramatic skin problem to justify maintaining a healthy barrier.
Don't force exfoliation.
If your skin is actively irritated, recovery comes before resurfacing.
SPF still matters.
UV exposure can aggravate redness, inflammation and sensitivity.
Consistency beats experimentation.
Once sensitive skin is happy, don't constantly give it new reasons not to be.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Salva-Derm is the cream I want you to think of when your skin needs reassurance more than stimulation.
When it stings too easily. Flushes too easily. Becomes uncomfortable for seemingly no reason. Reacts to weather, products or environmental changes. Or simply doesn't feel as strong and resilient as it used to.
We're not trying to force sensitive skin to become "tough."
We're helping restore the things healthy skin naturally relies on:
water, lipids, ceramides, microbiome balance and an effective protective barrier.
And that's why I like Salva-Derm.
It's not trying to impress you with peeling, tingling or overnight transformation.
It's trying to get your skin to a point where nothing dramatic is happening at all.
No burning.
No constant tightness.
No unpredictable reactions.
No feeling that you need to think about your face every five minutes.
Just comfortable, hydrated, resilient skin doing what healthy skin is supposed to do.
For sensitive skin, that quiet normality can be a very big result.
